IJver has two terraces on the Scheepsbouwkade at the NDSM shipyard. A large outdoor terrace that is packed all afternoon on nice days, and a covered indoor-outdoor terrace that is heated as soon as it gets colder. This means you can still sit outside here in November, with a coat on and something warm or a beer to hand. The outdoor terrace is at the front of the industrial unit and is large enough for a sizable group. Next to it is the covered indoor-outdoor terrace, with a roof overhead and heating for the colder months. In the summer, everything opens up and one terrace flows into the other, so you can choose whether to sit in the full sun or the shade. As soon as autumn begins, the focus naturally shifts to the covered area.
On a lovely day, our outdoor terrace is one of the busier spots on the yard. You sit there with a view of the grounds and the graffiti that gives the NDSM its character, at long tables where you can join a group or at a smaller spot if you are just the two of you. It is the kind of terrace where you come for one drink and are still sitting there four hours later, because there is always another reason to stay just a little longer.
A terrace that only works in good weather is not much use to you in the Netherlands. That is why the indoor-outdoor terrace is covered and heated. You stay dry when it rains and you can hold your own just fine when it freezes, with exactly the same menu as inside. That makes sitting outside an option here in every month of the year, even when the rest of the wharf is deserted.
On the terrace you can get everything that is available inside too, including the twenty draught beer taps. The beer selection changes with the season, from something light for a warm afternoon to a heavier glass as it gets colder. If you don't know what to choose, you simply ask and you will get a suggestion close to what you normally drink. Food is available all day long, so you can easily sit down for a sandwich in between, a sharing platter or a full dinner outside. On warm days, that last table in the sun is usually the first to be taken.
